Police in Kerugoya, Kirinyaga County have arrested a 15-year-old girl, her parents and a man said to be her boyfriend after it emerged that the minor, who was supposed to join Form One in January 2020, had been “married off” to her 20-year-old lover.

The four are being held at the Kerugoya Police Station.

Kirinyaga Central Deputy County Commissioner, Daniel Ndege, told K24 Digital that the girl scored 272 marks out of the possible 500, and was supposed to join a secondary school in Kirinyaga, but failed to show up for admission, despite the January 24 deadline expiring.

Ndege said that area chief discovered that the teenager had been “married off” to her 20-year-old boyfriend after a principal at the school she was called to join informed him that the girl was among the few students who were yet to report for Form One studies.

The chief alerted police officers, who stormed the said-boyfriend’s house in Kerugoya Town, and found the two in the man’s house.

The teenager and her partner were arrested. Police, thereafter, went over to the minor’s parents’ home in Kerugoya Town, where her father and mother were also apprehended.

Police say they have established that the girl was married off on Christmas Day.

Ndege says the four will be arraigned on Monday.
