Man who killed wife for dumping him is feeling sad, suicidal and cannot sleep – Mathari hospital tells court

Mathare hospital has revealed to a Nairobi court that 25-year-old man who killed his wife for dumping him is feeling sad, cannot sleep and has suicidal thoughts

Stephen Nyangeri Mauti had pleaded guilty to charges of manslaughter on October, 14, 2021 but the court ordered for a mental examination to be carried on him at Mathare mental hospital to ascertain whether he is fit to stand trial.

The prosecutor James Gachoka tabled a medical report from Mathare hospital in court indicating that the accused is feeling sad has insomnia and suicidal ideation thus he is unfit to stand trial.

"Stephen Nyangeri Mauti was examined in the presence of DCI officer, the accused uncle and a nursing officer, “read the mental report.

The hospital further recommended the murder suspect be admitted at the facility for a period of one month to undergo treatment. 

It is alleged that on October 3, 2021 at Kangemi Dam site within Kangemi sub-county, Nairobi County he unlawfully killed Faith Nyatichi.

On that fateful day the deceased purportedly left her husband to go visit her cousin in Kiserian and after a while the accused called his wife to know when she will come back only for the deceased to inform him she had travelled to the village.

The accused made several inquiries from the deceased relatives including her brother and was later informed that his wife has no relatives in Kiserian and that she had not travelled to her rural area as alleged.

On October 1, 2021 the deceased went back to her husband where they ate lunch and took a leisure walk within Kangemi market and would later return to their home where the deceased prepared supper which they ate and later went to bed.

On October 3, 2021 the deceased prepared breakfast and as they were enjoying the sumptuous meal tea the accused is alleged to have confronted her with the truth that she had dumped him for another man and started yelling that he was not a man enough.

The accused told the police that he grabbed her and tried to calm the situation down by blocking her mouth with his hands but later discovered she was unconscious where he immediately rushed her to a nearby hospital with the help of his neighbours. 

Nairobi Senior Principal Magistrate Bernard Ochoi has ordered the suspect to be detained at Mathare Mental hospital for a period of one month. 

The case will be mentioned on November 22, 2021.
