A man and his two daughters died on the spot when the private vehicle they were travelling in collided head on with a public service vehicle in Kiambu.

The accident happened at Njira ya Ngenia area along the busy Nairobi Nakuru highway in Limuru sub-county.

Eyewitnesses said that the salon car which was heading towards Nakuru, was attempting to overtake another car that was ahead when it collided with an oncoming matatu heading towards Nairobi.

“We heard a loud bang followed by cries for help by occupants of the matatu. The occupants of the vehicle were bleeding. It was an ugly scene” Jeremiah Mbugua, an eyewitness said.

Immediately after the accident, a traffic jam stretched about 2km on both sides of the highway since the wreckage of the two vehicles stood in the middle of the road.

Traffic police led by Tigoni base commander George Onsongo got to the scene and cleared the traffic on the highway.

Speaking to journalists at the scene of the accident, Onsongo said the driver and two passengers who were in the saloon car died on the spot while the matatu’s occupants escaped with serious injuries.

Onsongo asked the drivers to be careful and drive at a speed that they can control their vehicles whenever an incident happens on the road.

“We are urging drivers to be more careful and drive their vehicles at a speed that they can control whenever an incident happens along the road so that we can reduce fatality on our roads. It's painful to lose loved ones” the police boss said.

The survivors were rushed to different hospitals such as Kikuyu hospital, Limuru Nursing Home and Cottage hospital in Limuru town.

The mangled wreckage of the vehicles was towed to Tigoni police station as police embarked on investigating the accident.
