Man travels from Nairobi to in-laws’ home in Kakamega, beats up wife’s mother

An elderly woman from Isembe Village in Indangalasia area in Lurambi Constituency, Kakamega County has urged police to arrest her son-in-law for causing grievous bodily harm to her.

Flora Mwendwa said her son-in-law, who lives and works in Nairobi, arrived at her home on Monday, June 22 in the company of his brother, and were warmly welcomed.

“Shortly after I ushered them into the house, my son-in-law descended on me with punches and kicks before snatching my 2-year-old granddaughter from me,” said Mwendwa.

The victim sustained head and neck injuries, and was treated at a nearby health facility before filing a report at Emukaba Police Station.

The son-in-law, 38, and his brother, thereafter, hopped onto the saloon car they had travelled in, and left.

“He left behind his 5-year-old son,” said Mwendwa.

The victim told K24 Digital that her daughter brought the children home after schools were indefinitely closed in March due to coronavirus pandemic.

“I don’t know how my son-in-law, who lives in Nairobi, managed to flout the travel restrictions put in place by the Government. He should be arrested for two things: one, causing grievous bodily harm to me, and two, endangering the lives of people by breaching the COVID-19 containment measures,” said Mwendwa.

The victim’s daughter, 34, and the suspect have been married for eight years. Both live and work in Nairobi.

It remains unclear why the son-in-law travelled to Kakamega to take away his child, though the mother-in-law suspects that her daughter and her spouse could have gotten into a marital dispute, prompting the shocking actions by her husband.
