A middle-aged man allegedly took his own life at his inlaws' homestead in Kolondo village, Rachuonyo East sub-county, Homa Bay county, after failing to get back his estranged wife.

The man hailing from neighbouring Kisii county had visited his inlaws at Chabera to reconcile with his wife after separating recently following a domestic row.

The man is then said to have left the home in a huff after unsuccessful talks with the family. It is suspected that he sneaked back at night before hanging himself in the compound.

Atela Location Chief Perez Okoth confirmed the incident, saying the lifeless body of the man was found dangling on a tree next to his mother-in-law's house on Sunday morning.

"The man is said to have had differences with his wife who then went back to their home," the administrator said.

"He then followed the wife who had gone back to their home in order to solve the differences so they could reunite as a family, however, the engagements proved futile and he was denied his wife back."

According to villagers, this is the second incident to be reported at the said home.

The residents claim that another man committed suicide at the home and similar circumstances sometime back.

The chief, however, appealed to various families to look for amicable ways of solving various family issues to avoid such incidents.

"I want to tell our people that we should be in a position of solving family differences without infringing either side's rights and emotions," she said.

The body of the deceased was moved to Rachuonyo Sub-county Hospital mortuary pending autopsy and police investigations.
