In one of the most shocking and macabre attacks in recent times, a 21-year-old woman from Nkabune Village in Meru County was at 1pm Wednesday beheaded by a man over reasons yet to be known.

Witnesses say a young pupil, who was heading home from school, saw the suspect running towards a shamba carrying the woman’s head in one hand and clutching a blood-stained panga in the other hand.

Blood was gushing out of the woman’s neck, when passersby came across her body abandoned on a road in the village.

The deceased has been identified as Justa Mwongania, a mother of a two-year-old child, and a casual labourer at Nkabune Technical Institute.

Witnesses say Justa was heading to work after lunch break when the gruesome incident happened.

Passersby followed the blood trail into the shamba and found the woman’s head dumped nearly 40 meters from the road.

The identity of the man behind the gory killing remains unknown, with Imenti North OCPD Robinson Mboloi saying they have begun investigations.

Justa’s family declined to speak to the media.

Justa was living with her female cousin, who also declined to reveal whether she suspects her partner could be behind the murder.

The deceased’s body was taken to Meru Level 5 Hospital mortuary.
