A family in Kwanungu area of Mumbuni in Mwingi West is still reeling in shock after one of their family members was shot dead by a police officer.

Alex Musili, a 26-year-old, was asleep when two police officers raided his house over allegations that he had stolen Ksh10,000.

Musili's brother Yoana Sammy said the officers handcuffed him (Sammy) before breaking into his brother's house using a block of wooden wood.

"They used a block of wood to break into his room. When he came out, he tried hitting his head with the wood but missed him, " Sammy recalled.

After missing him, one of the officers who was armed stepped a few steps backwards and shot him.

"I immediately heard a gunshot and saw my brother lying down in a pool of blood," he said

After the incident, Sammy said he was taken to Mumbuni Police station, where he was only asked his brother's name before being released.

"On our way, they shot in the air to scare locals who had started gathering to find out what was going on," he added.

Juliana Sammy, the mother of the deceased, said her son passed on while they were preparing to take him to hospital.

Daniel Sammy who is a village elder faulted the local leadership stating they had warned that they would arrest the deceased for allegedly stealing Ksh10,000.

"They accused him of stealing ksh.10,000 on January 2 and warned that they would arrest him. Instead of arresting him, they have now killed him!" his father recounted.

The family is now appealing to the government to intervene and ensure they get justice.

"My son was so young and at his prime age. Even if he had wronged, killing him was not an option," he said.

Mwingi West sub-county Police Commander, Kazungu Charo, confirmed the incident, saying the officer, who pulled the trigger, has been arrested.

The officer is being held at Mwingi Police station awaiting to be arraigned in court.
