Man shot dead after police raid at chang’aa den turns chaotic

A man was shot dead while a police officer sustained injuries on Sunday, July 10 following a confrontation between police and revellers at Urefu in Ugunja, Siaya County.

The officers, who were on patrol duties raided a chang’aa den in the area and arrested its owner identified as Nyamalo.

The officers claimed that the woman’s neighbour, who was later identified as Aloice Owino Ooko, rushed to his house and came out armed with a panga.

“Upon her arrest, the deceased who is a neighbour rushed to his house, came with a panga and advanced towards Constable Douglas Wangila with an intention of cutting him,” police said.

A police report seen by K24 Digital indicated that Ooko chased the officer towards the road and the officer fired two warning shots in the air.

“In the process, the officer was cut on the left forearm and his AK47 rifle damaged. The officer in self-defence shot the deceased in the neck. The bullet entered from the right side, exiting from the left," police report stated.

Ooko was rushed to Ambira Sub-County hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

“The officer was treated at the same facility and discharged in fair condition. Investigations into the shooting have been launched and the panga and rifle kept as exhibits,” police said.

Early last month, two people were also shot dead while two others sustained serious gunshot injuries when police officers from Muhoroni police post went to arrest a chang’aa dealer in Koru, Muhoroni, Kisumu County.

They proceeded to Oduwo village where they recovered 40 litres of the brew and a bag of bhang.

While heading to the station, they were attacked by members of the public who managed to free three suspects namely ‘Nyakabondo’, Lawrence Okongo and Patrick Lumumba and the exhibits.

In the process, a bodaboda rider who had taken them to the scene was accidentally shot in the neck by one of the officers.

Hours later, the body of Dodosphil Odhiambo Onyango, 31, who had been shot in the pelvic area, was also found in the vicinity.
