Police in Navakholo, Kakamega County are holding in custody a 57-year-old man accused of physically assaulting his 38-year-old wife.

Issa Arafat, a resident of Emukhambi Village, is said to have battered his spouse on Tuesday, June 23, over allegations that she was cheating on him with her workmate.

The suspect’s wife, Afusa Namiswa, works as a tea lady at a private hospital in Kakamega County, whereas her alleged lover dresses patients’ wounds at the same facility.

Arafat said he knew about his partner’s unfaithfulness when he visited his ailing father, who had been admitted at the hospital where Namiswa works.

Namiswa, however, denies her husband’s allegations.

“I am not unfaithful. I serve tea at the hospital; the man he is accusing me of secretly seeing, cleans patients’ wounds after surgical procedures. The nature of my work demands I greet people before serving them. On several occasions, when I meet the man he is accusing me of cheating with, I have to greet him and know how he is doing. So, when my husband saw me talking to my colleague, he thought I was flirting with him. I have never cheated on him,” said Namiswa.

Upon returning home on Tuesday evening, Arafat is said to have descended on his wife with kicks and blows. The victim’s screams attracted the attention of neighbours, who rushed to the scene and rescued Namiswa.

The suspect, thereafter, embarked on removing the doors of his house, the roof and bringing down the walls, while saying: “I don’t want my cheating wife to live here anymore”.

A neighbour, Maselina Mitungu, told K24 Digital that Arafat often complained publicly that his wife, the mother of their eight children (five daughters and three sons), was adulterous.

Arafat and his spouse have been married for at least 15 years.

The suspect was arrested Tuesday evening for causing grievous bodily harm to his wife.
