A 21-year-old man on Tuesday, September 6, 2022, informed a Mombasa court that he was unable to repay the Ksh2000 that he allegedly stole from his employer's M-Pesa shop due to poverty.

Mtoi Kuri informed Mombasa senior resident magistrate Rita Orora that he wanted to settle the matter outside court with the complainant, however, he had been unable to raise the Ksh2000 to pay back his employer.

The magistrate who sympathized with the suspect's situation enquired about when he would be able to raise the amount.

“I thought this is a matter that you can settle outside court, have you tried to engage the complainant, and see if you can raise the extra Ksh2000 and then the court will order for a refund of your cash bail to facilitate the payment,” posed the magistrate.

The suspect requested the court to allow him more time to raise the balance.

“Your honour, I request for you to give me up to November for me to source for the balance and bring it during the next hearing date,” he pleaded.

Orora pleaded with the complainant to allow the suspect the two months he had requested to raise the money.

The suspect had been charged on February 7 this year for stealing Ksh6,000 from his employer Japheth Gitonga at Algesa shop in the Jua Kali area, Mvita sub-county within Mombasa.

The matter will be mentioned on November 17 this year.
