A youthful man from Embakasi in Nairobi died on Thursday, October 29 after he was knocked down by a Forward Travellers matatu while he was escaping from a police officer.

The incident happened at Chokaa area in Ruai around 7am.

The man, identified as Ambrose Wanjala, was running away to evade arrest for not wearing a face mask.

Irate residents barricaded Kangundo Road, protesting against harassment by police officers during the coronavirus crisis.

The protesters lit bonfire and engaged police in running battles, consequently disrupting traffic flow on Kangundo Road.

According to the demonstrators, police officers in the area usually demand a Ksh500 bribe whenever they catch residents walking on the streets without wearing face masks.

“It is unfortunate that Wanjala, who engages in juakali work, died while being chased over a Ksh10 mask,” said one of the protesters.

Residents now want the transfer of the cop, who chased Wanjala to his death.

Wanjala’s body was taken to a city hospital morgue.
