A middle-aged man from Nairobi was on Tuesday, January 7, arraigned at the Milimani Law Courts on allegations that he verbally abused a female trader at Maasai Market.

The suspect, David Kigoma Onguyi, who was charged with creating disturbance in a manner likely to cause breach of peace, is alleged to have insulted Nyaboke [other names withheld] on January 5, 2020 at the Maasai Market, where she runs a Maasai curio shop.

Onguyi allegedly told Nyaboke: “Wewe ni mchafu, na hauna suruali. Na kama uko nayo, najua imetoboka. Kisha, tafuta tissue utumie kujipanguza ukienda kukojoa (You are dirty, and I know that you do not wear underwear. And, even if you have worn one today, I am sure it is torn. And again, remember to use tissue paper to wipe yourself clean after answering the short call of nature).”

Onguyi, a porter-cum-menial worker at the market, is said to have, thereafter, threatened to beat up Nyaboke.

The alleged series of insults began after Nyaboke is said to have asked Onguyi to settle a Ksh500 debt that he owed her.

The accused, the court was told, took a customer to Nyaboke’s shop on December 19, 2019, where she bought goods worth Ksh500.

The said-customer gave Onguyi the money, and asked him to hand it over to Nyaboke. Onguyi, however, declined to give Nyaboke the money, promising to settle the debt “later in the day”.

Subsequent attempts by Nyaboke to have Onguyi settle the debt bore no fruit.

On January 5, 2020, Onguyi surged to Nyaboke’s shop, where he allegedly hurled the said-expletives, claiming that Nyaboke’s genitals were “stinking”.

Onguyi made the remarks as other traders in the market and customers watched in disbelief.

Nyaboke, thereafter, reported the incident at the KICC Police Station, leading to the arrest of the suspect.

Onguyi denied the charges before Senior Resident Magistrate Mothoni Nzibe, and was released on a Ksh10, 000 cash bail.

Nzibe set January 21, 2020 as the case hearing date.
