A man in Githunguri, Kiambu County, was Tuesday evening beaten by members of the public after he attempted to rape a woman.

Peter Kariuki, 38, was rescued from the irate mob by police officers from the nearby Ngewa station.

"He waylaid the victim at a secluded spot as she returned to her home at Nyaga village from Kwa Maiko shopping centre, attempting to commit the despicable act," Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said in a statement.

According to DCI, the victim, who was heading home from Kiamako market managed to wrestle with Kariuki and finally overpowered him.

"In a matter of minutes before standby police officers from Ngewa station could arrive at the scene, Kariuki's body had been turned into a punching bag, with responders serving him an overdose of mighty blows and hot slaps to instill some manners," DCI added.

The suspect was apprehended by the officers and taken to Ngewa Health Centre where he was treated and discharged.

A Lenovo phone belonging to the victim was found in his pockets upon search.

He is currently being held at Ngewa Police Station.
