A middle-aged man from Kiminini in Trans Nzoia West was on Saturday morning (December 5) found dead in a ditch.

The deceased, identified only as Jose, is alleged to have fallen into the ditch and died while attempting to jump over it while intoxicated. The ditch is situated in the farm of a resident identified as Philemon Okundi.

Jose, who worked as a herdsman in Area 72 in Kiminini, received his November salary on Friday, December 4.

Speaking to K24 Digital, area rights activist, Richard Masanja, urged Kenyans to embrace responsible drinking.

“If you know that you are a lightweight when it comes to alcohol consumption, then it is advisable that you drink your liquor in small manageable amounts. It is a shame that someone can drink to the extent that he can’t lift his leg,” said Masanja.

The rights activist urged authorities to crack down on sellers of illicit liquor, saying since the alcohol sold in the villages is mostly unregulated, chances are high that the brewers add poisonous substances in the drinks to increase alcohol levels.

As of the time of publishing this story, Jose’s body was still in the ditch where he died.
