Police in Makueni have recovered bhang worth Ksh1 million packed in nylon sacks being ferried along Makindu-Wote road in Makindu sub-county, Makueni County.

Makueni County Police Commander Joseph Ole Napeiyan says a multi-agency team comprising of National Government Administrative Officers (NGAO), DCI and area chiefs nabbed the drug while on surveillance.

He said that the vehicle registration number was identified as KDG 245D Nissan NV 200 white in colour.

The police commander said when his officers approached the vehicle, a person suspected to be the driver took off and disappeared in the thicket leaving behind the vehicle with a running engine.

In suspicion, the police officer decided to investigate the vehicle, and in disbelief found it loaded with bags of bhang.

“We approximate that the drug's street value stands at Ksh1 million,” Napeiyan said.

A further search of the suspected motor vehicle revealed several motor-vehicle number plates suspected to be used to hide the identity of the vehicle while on transit.

“Ignition key, two number plates with assorted clothes and a mobile phone plus a notebook were found in the car,” he explained.

Makindu Assistant County commissioner Fred Masijila says the illegal drugs might have been headed to the coastal regions.

He added that many young people have perished due to drug abuse and that the administration has put more effort to eradicate the vice.

“We put drug peddlers on notice that their days are numbered. They should stop selling illegal drugs,” Masijila warned.

The scene was processed and the vehicle moved to Makindu police station while the Narcotics were securely kept as exhibits.

Detectives from Makindu have also commenced a manhunt for the driver of the vehicle.
