Medical practitioners lament Magoha's death has robbed Kenya of great surgeon

Kenyan doctors revealed how the medical profession suffered a great loss following the death of Prof George Magoha.

In a statement following Magoha's death, the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Union (KMPDU) said his dedication, passion, and contributions have had a lasting impact on the medical profession.

"We are deeply saddened by the loss of former Education CS Professor George Magoha, a true visionary leader in the education and health sectors. His dedication, passion, and contributions have had a lasting impact and will be deeply missed by his family, relatives, former students, colleagues, and Kenyans," KMPDU said in a tweet.

The medical practitioners' umbrella body further lamented that the profession has lost a great surgeon following Magoha's death.

"He upheld the medical profession and ensured there was harmony in the sector, including helping resolve payment of allowances for university dons. The medical profession has lost a great surgeon," KMPDU said.

KMPDU further added that Magoha reformed institutions such as the College of Health Sciences, Medical Council among others.

"He reformed institutions, established discipline, built infrastructure; from College of Health Sciences to Main campus to Medical Council, and to education ministry. He instilled discipline in conduct of examinations Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and loved ones during this difficult time. We will always remember Prof. George Magoha for his legacy. May his soul rest in peace."

Magoha had a long and illustrious career in medicine, academia and public service.

He died on Tuesday, January 24, 2023, at the age of 71 after collapsing at home.

According to a statement by The Nairobi Hospital, Magoha collapsed at home and was rushed to the facility, where he was pronounced dead after efforts to resuscitate him failed.

Speaking to the press at the Lee funeral home, Magoha's friend Prof. Walter Mwanda said the deceased knew his time was up and that he was at peace with that.
