Police officer and friend killed in Machakos

A police officer based in Masii, Mwala Sub County has been shot dead by unknown persons at Kyamutheke, few metres from Kathome market, in Machakos County on Friday evening, July 30.

Confirming the incident, Machakos County Commissioner John Ondego said the officer was killed instantly together with a friend he was travelling with from Kyumbi market, Athiriver Sub County on Nairobi- Mombasa highway.

The officer was with other two friends where one escaped with gunshots wounds.

"It's said our officer and two other men who we have not identified were coming from Kyumbi where it's said they had gone for lunch and on their way, another vehicle which seemed to have been following them before ordeal appeared and a man emerged from it and started shooting at them," Ondego said.

The private vehicle the police was travelling in had been sprayed with bullets. Commissioner Ondego says the killers seemed to have trailed the deceased from elsewhere.

"The vehicle of the killers came from behind and the killers started shooting at our officer and his friends, We do not know where they were coming from," said the commissioner

The motive of the killing has not yet been established.

Commissioner Ondego, who’s the Machakos County Chairman of a multiagency security investigation, said they have commenced a probe to unearth the reason for the killing and those involved.

“I ask members of the public to exercise patience as we dig deeper to know what motivated this killing of our officer, I assure them no stone will be left unturned,” he said.

Their two bodies have been taken to Machakos level 5 referral hospital pending autopsy while the survivor has been admitted in the same hospital nursing gunshot wounds.

The incident happened barely four days after five armed thugs’ invaded Equity Bank Matuu branch and stole thousands of monies leaving two police officers who were manning the bank injured.
