Kenya Coast Guard police officers in Lake Victoria, on Saturday, thwarted the attempt of unknown people trying to steal fish from fish cages at Mulukoba beach in Budalangi.

According to the officer-in-charge of the police wing, Athman Juma, the officers on duty spotted the suspects midway as they pulled the fish cages out of water. The suspects however managed to escape into the darkness.

Juma has confirmed that police managed to recover 15 sacks suspected to be meant for ferrying the fish valued at ksh4000.

"My officers saw two fish cages being pulled towards the lakeshore and they responded immediately but the suspect took off. We managed to recover 15 sacks that were meant to carry the fish," Athman said.

Similar fish theft incidents occurred at Busembe beach in Funyula constituency last year.

The county government of Busia initiated the fish cage project in Lake Victoria in a bid to ease pressure on diminishing fish catches in the region.
