The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) has raised concerns over the role of police in keeping the peace as the country prepares for the August 9 general election.

Their concern comes after a standoff at Jacaranda Grounds on Sunday, June 19 where Azimio la Umoja and Kenya Kwanza supporters clashed.

LSK President Eric Theuri said the police need to train on how to handle members of the public, especially during this electioneering period.

“The conduct of police in this election shows that violence can be reduced if a situation such as the one witnessed in Jacaranda can be handled better. Politicians should also reign on their supporters," Theuri said.

LSK wants police recklessness reported

The LSK boss further said Kenyans should be allowed their constitutional right to freedom of assembly which allows for peaceful rallies.

The lawyer's body has also called on the public to report matters of human rights violations and excessive use of force by police to LSK as well as the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) and the Kenya National Human Rights Commission (KNHRC).

Further, they have asked the police to refrain from violating citizens’ rights unless deemed genuinely for the protection of life and property.

“Unless it is for protection of life or property, let the police not violate the rights of citizens. The force used must also be non-lethal,” he added.

He also called on the Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai to ensure the organizers and funders of the riots are arrested.
