Drama ensued Tuesday night at Mbui Nzau Market in Makueni after locals stole and drunk sacramental wine from a vehicle that was involved in a road accident on the Nairobi-Mombasa highway.

The vehicle, belonging to a courier services company, had been hired to transport the sacramental wine, rosaries, church wallpapers, Catholic books, a bed, among other items to a parish in Makueni County.

The driver of the vehicle is said to have lost control and hurtled off the road, before landing on stalls in the market. He, however, escaped the accident unscathed.

Traders and locals, who were still in the market at the time, rushed to the scene and broke open the van’s rear door and stole nearly all the items that were being transported.

Upon learning that sacramental wine was part of the goods in transit, some of the locals immediately opened the sacramental jars and downed the contents.

On Wednesday, September 16, priests at the Makueni parish, where the items were to be delivered, spoke with Mbui Nzau Market leadership, saying they would pray for bad fortunes to befall those who stole the items.

Aron Ngolanye, the chairperson of traders in the market, communicated the priests’ message to the locals, prompting some of them to return the goods due to fear of being cursed by the men of God.

“Some traders and locals said they bought the goods without knowing how they had been acquired. They have since returned or pledged to return the stolen goods,” Ngolanye told K24 Digital.
