Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has urged the State to legalise the planting, use and sale of bhang in Kenya.

Speaking at the memorial service of the Late Kibra MP Ken Okoth held at the Moi Girls’ High School in Nairobi on Thursday, August 1, the county chief said medical marijuana can go a long way in reducing the number of deaths arising from cancer.

The governor’s statement mirrors a September 2018 suggestion by the Late Ken Okoth, who wrote a letter to the National Assembly, petitioning the law-making organ to regulate the growing and safe use of marijuana in Kenya.

“The proposed Bill seeks to ensure that there is regulation for growth and safe use of marijuana and hemp including the registration of growers of growers, producers, manufacturers and users with special focus on protection of children/minors from illicit use just as we do with tobacco and alcohol,” read the Late MP’s letter.

Okoth also wanted research and policy development on growth and use of marijuana and hemp for medical, industrial, textile and recreational purposes “with a focus on preservation of intellectual property rights for Kenyan research and natural heritage, knowledge and our indigenous plant assets.”
