The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has confirmed the arrest of five Kwale county officials accused of graft.

In a statement, EACC noted that the five including the county head of treasury Vincent Mbito and his four brothers were arrested in connection to a Ksh48.9 million graft scandal involving misuse of public funds in the county.

EACC said the brothers, Vincent Chirima Mbito (County head of treasury), Mongo Mbito Mongo (County Revenue Officer), Hassan Shilingi Mbito (Driver, Kwale Water and Sewerage Company Limited), Mwaiwe Mongo Mbito (Kwale County Procurement Officer), and Chindoro Mongo Mbito (National Government) are accused of using their family companies to execute fraudulent deals with the county government and are set to be arraigned in court.

"The current charges relate to 10 contracts fraudulently awarded to the companies; Rome Investments and Chilongola Limited; which were paid exaggerated amounts Kes. 44,919,341 and Kes 4,007,943 respectively. The total amount was distributed to the suspects," EACC said.

The commission stated that the tenders were for the supply and delivery of sanitation materials, food and ration, general office supplies, and institutional appliances.

The suspects have been escorted from Mombasa Central Police Station to the Mombasa Anti-Corruption Court to take a plea.
