The newly introduced DNA home test kits which can be used to determine a child's paternity has caused excitement among Kenyans on social media.
The DNA home test kits will allow people to learn about their genetic makeup and ancestry including paternity, maternity, siblings, twins, grandparents, aunts and uncles.
The kits are expected to cost Ksh600 each. The affordability has sent social media into a frenzy as many men expressed interest to verify the paternity of their children.

However, there is a hidden fee that comes with DNA home test kits that people have not been told about.
The Ksh600 is for the DNA home test kits ALONE. One still has to pay a separate fee for laboratory testing.
The kit is used to collect the genetic information which has to be analysed in a laboratory to get comprehensive details one is seeking - be it paternity, maternity etc.
Most facilities offering professional DNA tests charge between Ksh10,000 to Ksh30,000 per person for genetic testing services.
How DNA test kits work
The DNA home test kit contains two swabs. One swab is used to rub on the inside of one's cheek for 20 seconds with the other swab is used to repeat the process using the other side of the cheek.
People are advised not to eat or drink immediately prior to collecting the saliva sample from the cheeks.
One is required to fill in details in a form that comes with the DNA home test kits.
The home test kit has a self-addressed return envelope.
One is required to mail the envelope with the filled form and the two swabs after collecting the saliva sample from the cheeks.
You are supposed to receive your results through the email you provided on the swab envelope just a day after mailing the kit to the facility offering professional DNA tests.
