Inspector General of Police nominee Japheth Koome has revealed that he is worth Ksh 89.9million.

Koome made the revelation when he appeared before Members of Parliament (MPs) at Parliament buildings on Tuesday, November 8, 2022.

He stated that his wealth is accrued from owning property, 37 hectares of land in his rural home, savings in Sacco, motor vehicles and two tractors.

"I have an account with the Kenya commercial bank where my salary goes, I also have a share capital of about Ksh47,000 at the police Sacco, some deposits in savings, vehicles, two tractors and tractor equipment. I also have some land of about 37 hectares in my village, two plots within the local shopping centre, a plot in Nairobi, and two others in Kitengela. I also have liabilities, a loan of Ksh1.1 million therefore my net worth is about 89,932,864," Koome stated.

After the vetting, the committee in charge will have 28 days to either approve or reject Koome in accordance with the Public Appointments Act, 2011.

The latest comes weeks after Cabinet Secretaries (CS) were vetted and subsequently sworn into their various dockets.

Kenyans were left astonished by the mind-blowing figures of personal worth declared by the CSs who appeared before the National Assembly's Appointment Committee.

During their vetting, which was presided over by National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula, the cabinet secretaries were compelled to declare their net worth and how they accrued their wealth.

A majority of the CSs revealed that they accrued their wealth from the shares they held in various listed companies, the value of their property and income from farming.

Prime CS Musalia Mudavadi stood out as the wealthiest CS with a net worth of Ksh4Billion.

Mudavadi was followed by CS Agriculture Mithika Linturi whose net worth stood at Ksh1.2Billion.

CS Lands Zachariah Njeru and CS Public Service Aisha Jumwa, who had a net worth of Ksh80million and Ksh100million respectively, were the least wealthy in the pack.

Ruto nominates Koome

Koome was nominated by President William Ruto as the next Inspector General of Police.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, September 27, Ruto stated that Koome would succeed Mutyambai who resigned and proceeded on terminal leave.

"IG Police Mutyambai for his request to proceed on terminal leave because of his health situation."

"After discussions with Mutyambai and in consideration of his service to the nation and his health, I have accepted that he will proceed on terminal leave in the six months that he has on his contract,” Ruto stated.

After the vetting process, Koome will be sworn in as the new police IG as dictated by the Constitution.

"The Inspector-General is appointed by the President with the approval of Parliament; and shall exercise independent command over the National Police Service, and perform any other functions prescribed by national legislation," Article 245 of the Constitution stated.

Koome was previously attached to the Kenya police college in Kiganjo. Prior to this, he served as the Nairobi police commander before being promoted to become the principal assistant of the Deputy IG.
