Nairobi: Knife-wielding thug arrested after attacking, robbing pedestrian in Huruma

A knife-wielding thug was on Tuesday, December 13 arrested for alleged robbery with violence.

According to police, the thug identified as Silvanus Ochieng is said to have attacked a pedestrian before robbing them and taking off with an unknown amount of money and a phone.

He was nabbed after a chase pitting the suspect and his two accomplices against police officers from Huruma police station.

He is also believed to be part of a notorious armed gang that targets matatus along Juja road.

"A knife-wielding thug who attacked a pedestrian yesterday evening in Huruma and took away his mobile phones and an unknown amount of money has been arrested. Silvanus Ochieng, was arrested after a brief chase at Huruma grounds pitting the notorious thug who is part of a gang that snatches mobile phones and other valuables from passengers in public service vehicles along Juja road," part of DCI's statement read.

Ochieng is currently held at Huruma police station waiting to be arraigned for robbery with violence charges.

This follows the arrest of a male ex-convict linked to recent incidents of robbery in Nairobi.

Police say the thug identified as Peter Waithaka was nabbed at Makongeni in Nairobi’s east lands suburbs after a review of CCTV footage in the city.

Describing him as an armed and dangerous gangster, officers noted that Waithaka was also responsible for several other robberies with violent incidents which led to some victims dying.

"His arrest followed a 48-hour well-calculated operation conducted by the Kilimani-based sleuths, who used bait to trap the serial killer who has previously served 6 years behind bars for a similar offence," part of the statement read.

Robbery evidence

After his arrest, Waithaka who is also said to have been a habitual offender and an ex-convict escorted officers to his home in Wangige where they recovered several exhibits.

"Police in Kilimani Nairobi through the use of CCTV cameras have nabbed a male suspect linked to recent robbery incidents within the city. The suspect who is an ex-convict took the officers to his house in Wangige where officers recovered several exhibits, among them shoes and clothes," the police report read in part.

DCI says the 33-year-old is also believed to be the head of a gang behind the daylight armed robberies that have been reported in Kilimani and its environs and was responsible for the cold-blooded murder of a Greek National on October 15, 2022.
