Tension is high in Mutha area of Kitui South after one person was allegedly hacked to death by camel herders on Saturday, October 15, 2022.

Residents brought the town to a standstill after staging demonstrations to protest against the killing of the man identified as Mutuku.

The residents closed their shops and barred the police from picking up the body of the deceased as they demanded the county commissioner to address the frequent attacks in the region by suspected herders from North Eastern.

"We are not going to allow the police to pick up the body of Mutuku. We are going to bury it because whenever a person is killed they pick the body and that becomes the end of the story, justice is never served," a resident said.

The residents demanded that the authorities order the herders out of the region immediately.

Kitui County commissioner Erastus Mbui, however, urged the residents to remain calm to allow the police to do their work.

Speaking to K24 Digital, Commissioner Mbui said allowing the residents' calls would interfere with investigations.

"The demand by the residents for the camel herders to be driven from the area with immediate effect will interfere with the ongoing investigations to get the suspect of the murder," Mbui said adding that a police vehicle was destroyed during the protests.

He called on the residents to cooperate with the law enforcers, for now, to ensure that the suspect is arrested.

The body of the deceased was finally moved Mutomo Sub-county Hospital Mortuary as police continue with investigations.
