Kisumu Deputy Governor Dr Mathew Owili is facing an imminent eviction over rent arrears for 14 months amounting to Sh1.4 million.

United Millers, the landlord’s deputy governor, has issued him with a letter saying they will not renew his tenancy agreement in September if the debt is not cleared.

Mr Owili, who has been having sleepless nights fearing eviction from his Milimani apartment, was shocked to learn that the county through the finance department headed by Mr Nerry Achar has not been remitting his rent.

His earlier efforts to compel the finance department to pay the debt bore no fruit.

On Wednesday night, when his boss Governor Anyang Nyong’o was meeting visiting ambassadors at the Royal Swiss Hotel, Mr Owili seized the opportunity to communicate his displeasure with the manner in which he has been treated.

Mr Owili is reported to have accosted Achar in the presence of Governor Nyong’o demanding to know why he was on the verge of being kicked out of his house.

Governor Nyong’o was dumbfounded at the turn of events, claiming he was not aware and casually told Mr Achar to ensure the matter is handled amicably.

Mr Achar is facing impeachment after Kisumu County Assembly members accused him of incompetence and the deputy governor’s issue piles more pressure on him.
