Two pastors in Kisii County have asked the government to reduce the prices of fuel, hiked last week to ease the suffering of the majority of poor Kenyans.

South Kenya Conference ( SKC) Executive Secretary, Pastor Tom Miyienda and Gospel Embassy Chapel Pastor Peter Morwabe noted the increment of the prices has forced investors to increase the prices of goods, and transport and increased the cost of living.

Speaking separately, the clergymen implored the government to reduce the prices and embrace other alternative ways to generate revenue to run the country’s economy.

“The cost of living is high. Investors will fear investing in the country to create jobs for our youths and boost the country's economic growth and development” pastor Miyienda explained.

The official noted salaries have not been increased to march with the increase in the fuel prices, noting Kenyans will reduce consumption and other economic activities due to the high cost of living and reduce the government’s revenue.

He lauded the government for reducing the price of fertilizer from Ksh6000 per 50kg bag to Ksh3,500 but added that it will be expensive for farmers to ferry their goods to markets for sale due to the high cost of fuel.

“The hike in fuel prices is going to have a ripple effect. Farmers will be compelled to sell their produce at high prices despite the reduction of the price of fertilizer” Miyienda told People Daily Digital at the Conference’s headquarters.

People with personal vehicles, noted the official, will be forced to park them and use public means to reach their offices, adding it will affect their work and create conflicts.

Pastor Morwabe lauded Kenyans for embracing peace during campaigns, elections and after the announcement of the results and urged them to maintain it.

He appealed to the government to reduce the prices of fuel and foodstuff to ease the suffering of the majority of poor Kenyans and those with low incomes.

“ I urge the government to empower Kenyans economically so that they can cope with periodic increments of prices of fuel which affects all sectors of the economy,” Pastor Morwabe said.
