Students from Kibirigwi Girls secondary school in Ndia constituency were forced to spend the night in the cold after fire gutted three domitories Sunday night.

Residents say the fire started at around 8pm when the students were still in class for their evening preps.

Confirming the unfortunate incident, area Sub county Deputy County Commissioner Moses Ivuto said no student was injured during the incident.

He also added that investigations had been launched to establish the cause of the fire that consumed property worth millions of shillings.

"Luckily, no student was injured and we are yet to identify the cause of the fire," he said.

Kibirigwi residents, who rushed to the facility to assist in putting out the fire, were forced to desperately watch as the fire spread saying that the area has been facing serious water shortage.

This is as a result of the construction of the Kenol- Marua Dual carriage which has seen the water system affected to give way for the construction of the highway.

"We haven't had water for sometime and thus we had no alternative but to helplessly watch as the fire spread and consume all the property in the three domitories," a resident noted.

Also, the residents were angered by the fact that Kirinyaga County Fire department did not show up to rescue the situation.

The fire, was put out by two fire engines, one from the neighboring Nyeri County and another one belonging to one of the contractors, taking part in the construction of the Kenol-Marua Dual carriage.

However, it was already too late when the fire engine arrived since about 80 per cent of the property had been consumed.

The property include students personal effects and beds.

"What is wrong with county leadership that we have to ask for intervention from Nyeri? What happened to our fire engine," asked an irate crowd.
