Samson Cheruiyot, the father of late world marathon record holder Kelvin Kiptum, has revealed shocking details of what transpired days before his son's untimely death.

Speaking on Monday, February 12, 2024, a visibly heartbroken Cheruiyot recounted that four strange people showed up at his home inquiring details about the departed athlete for four days.

The four men who then claimed to be government officials persistently inquired about his son's whereabouts on account that they were investigating him.

Out of concern for his son, the devastated father attempted to seek answers on who the men were and why they were probing his son. However, they refused to reveal their identities and left his home.

"Kuna watu walikuja siku nne kumtafuta nyumbani, walisema wanataka kumwona wakati hii maneno ilitokea nikajiuliza walikua wanafanya uchunguzi gani kwa mtoto wangu… wakati huo, hao watu walikataa kujitambulisha. Niliwaambia wanipatie makaratasi kujitambulisha kuwa nia watu wa serikali, wakakataa, mpaka mmoja alijiondoa," he stated.

Loosely translates to:

"There are strange people who visited my home four days ago asking to see my son, I wondered what investigation they were conducting on my son because when I asked them to identify themselves they refused. I asked them to avail their identification documents to prove they are government officials but they still refused, until one of them left."

Kiptum's father is now appealing to the government to investigate and determine the circumstances that may have led to the death of his only son.

He has also called on the state to assist his family in navigating through the hard times as Kiptum was their only child and he has left them children to take care of.

Kiptum tragically lost his life in a road accident on the night of Sunday, February 11, 2024.

At the time of the unfortunate incident, the athlete was driving alongside his coach and a female passenger when he lost control of the vehicle, veered off the road and plunged into a ditch before hitting a tree.

Kiptum and his coach died on the spot while the female passenger sustained serious injuries.
