Prisoners at the Kibos Maximum prison in Kisumu County joined the rest of Kenyans in electing the next crop of leaders.

In the exercise, 79 prisoners lined up to cast their ballots.

According to the officer in charge of the prison Beverly Lung'atso, she stated that the inmates were only allowed to vote for the presidential candidates.

She told K24 Digital that the exercise began at around 7 am.

"We are here to witness our inmates cast their votes today to choose leaders of their choice for a better future," she said.

She revealed that in Kibos, there are a total of 823 inmates but only 79 were registered to vote at the facility as some others did not come with their identification cards.

"Some inmates who were registered to vote here were transferred to other prisons with others who were registered voters being admitted at her facility and thus they could not vote as well," she said.

To address the matter, the prison boss said that she will engage the Muhoroni returning officer to intervene.

"I will talk to the returning officer of Muhoroni to give me the way forward," she said.

However, the prisoners complained of slow exercise due to challenges that were experienced by the KIEMs kit.
