Mourners who had turned out in large numbers along Gatitu- Nyeri highway to bid farewell to former President Mwai Kibaki went home disappointed after the motorcade escorting his remains changed route and took the Karatina Mukurwe-ini Route instead of Karatina, Nyeri town and then to Othaya as it was earlier indicated.
Residents were eagerly waiting to see off their leader for the last time only for the convoy to take a different route.
They had come out in large numbers after a vehicle mounted with a public system went round Nyeri town and its environs in the middle of the night asking them to come out in large numbers to bid goodbye to their leader.
Yesterday Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga on his Facebook page urged Nyeri residents to come out in large numbers after announcing the routes the cortege would use.
"The H.E Mwai Kibaki cortege will pass through Temple road, Posta, then to Green hills, to National polytechnic all the way to Othaya through Gospel Outreach. Kindly bid him farewell by coming out," he wrote.
In response, Kieni Member of parliament Kanini Kega said that the issue was a military affair and that Mutahi should keep away from it.
"This is a military affair, we are aware of your clandestine ill intentions….try them," Kanini said.
However, in Karatina town, residents led by area MP Rigathi Gachagua turned out in large numbers to pay their last respects to their fallen hero.
