The Kenya Parents Association, Kiambu chapter, has appealed to the Ministry of Education to consider barring students found guilty of torching school premises from joining other boarding schools.

Kiambu Parents Association Chairman Samuel Wanjema says indisciplined learners should be restricted to day schools.

Wanjema spoke in Lari after visiting Kambaa Girls Secondary School, where students allegedly torched a dormitory early this week.

"The move will also see parents advise their children adequately. They will make them know that they will miss chances of learning if caught in any kind of disobedience or indiscipline," Wanjema said.

Wanjema said banning unruly students from boarding schools will save many innocent parents from incurring unnecessary financial losses brought about by arson incidents in schools.

"Parents have been suffering while paying fines. Some even borrow money from friends, banks and even Saccos to pay for such fines," he added.

Worrying fires in Kiambu

The chairman regretted that three schools in Lari Sub-county have witnessed fires deliberately started by undisciplined students.

Kambaa Girls is the latest school to report a fire incident. Though the fire was contained before it spread further, it destroyed valuable property in the dormitory.

Six students, who are suspected to have had a hand in the inferno, have since been arrested by the police.

Lari DCI boss Eunice Maingi said the girls are locked at Lari Police station as police continue with investigations into the incident.

She said the girls will be arraigned in court once investigations are complete.

The intelligence boss urged school managements to embrace other alternative techniques such as dialogue to deal with cases of indiscipline.

"Some of the issues that cause indiscipline may have started at home, school or something that can be controlled through dialogue," she said.

Other schools which have reported fires in the region in the recent past are Gitithia Girls and Kijibe Boys.
