A 17-year-old boy and a 16-year-old girl from Lalagin Village in Litein Town, Bureti Sub-County in Kericho County on Wednesday, August 14, narrowly escaped lynching after it was discovered that they were allegedly engaging in sexual intercourse.

According to one of Lalagin Village residents, the girl entered the boy’s house at 8pm Tuesday, and decided to spend the night there, consequently, raising suspicion among the neighbours.

On Wednesday 10am, neighbours stormed the boy’s house and demanded to know what the minors were up to.

With a section of the neighbours believing that the teenagers had engaged in sexual intercourse during the night, they started charging at the lovers, threatening to kill them.

Police and area assistant chief arrived at the scene and rescued the teenagers from the irate mob.

The minors were, thereafter, arrested and taken to Litein Police Station.

The boy told law enforcement officers that he sat his KCPE examination in 2018, but failed to progress to secondary school because his mother was unable to raise the needed school fees.

The boy, instead, opted to sell mandazis in the area, from which he managed to get money to rent a house and feed himself.

The girl, on the other hand, is a Form Two student at a nearby day school.

The girl had reportedly sought permission from her parents to visit her grandmother, when she allegedly branched at her lover’s house.

Bureti Sub-County police commander Felician Tengeye confirmed the incident, saying she has communicated with the teenagers’ parents and the children’s department to offer counseling to the two.

“Parents ought to take full responsibility of their children and counsel teenagers about the consequences of engaging in pre-marital sex,” said Tengeye.

The two minors refuted allegations that they engaged in sex on Tuesday night.

“We will escort them to hospital, where they will be subjected to medical examinations to confirm whether they indeed engaged in sex or not,” said Tengeye.

The girl’s father told K24 Digital that his daughter said she couldn’t return home on Wednesday because she “wanted to complete her assignments at her grandmother’s place”.

“I called her yesterday (Tuesday, August 14) and asked her to return home so that she look after her two siblings. She, however, told me that she had some school assignment which she wanted to complete before travelling back home today (Wednesday, August 15),” said the girl’s father.
