Kenyatta University students have given the government a 3-day ultimatum to allow owners of China Square mall to reopen the premises.

Student leaders want the mega store back in operation by Monday, March 6th, 2023, noting that the university community is the biggest beneficiary of the pocket-friendly prices it has been offering.

The KU student leaders' caucus also cautioned Trade Industry and Investments Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria against scaring away foreign investors through "careless statements."

Addressing journalists at Uni-City Mall where the China Square store is located within the learning institution's precincts, the student leaders said the government should lower the cost of living rather than the closure of businesses that offer competitive commodity prices.

Led by Kangi Dennis, Brian Rotich, Samuel Mwangi and Kevin Karasi the students asked government officials not to apply double standards in matters affecting the lives of Kenyans.

"The government cannot claim to be protecting interests of the common mwananchi by closing businesses that are selling their wares at affordable prices. Also as a country we cannot grow without foreign investors," Rotich stated.

China Square closed down this week after operating for about three weeks during which time it became a beehive of activity as shoppers and traders flocked there to buy various commodities.

The KU learners also warned the government against implementing proposals to increase fees for institutions of higher learning saying this would be a grave mistake coming at a time when the country is going through tough economic times.

They also said the issue of gay or same-sex rights should not take precedence over other crucial national matters
