The Atheist Society in Kenya (AIK) on Tuesday, October 12 asked Kenyan women to be as bold as Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua’s ex-wife Lilian Ng’ang’a and quit relationships if they are not happy.
In a statement sent to media houses, AIK through its leader Nyende Mumia said that they celebrated Ng’ang’a for publicly ending her relationship with the Governor and opting to start a new life with Julius Owino alias Juliani who is a musician.
According to Mumia, the lady was bold enough to beat Christianity beliefs and African traditions that dictates that a woman should stick to her marriage even if she is not happy.
“Religious institutions in Kenya forbid divorce, and there are strong cultural beliefs that women should endure unhealthy relationships and make them work because if there is a fault to be found in the relationship, it is on the part of the woman and her responsibility to fix it,” the statement read in part.
“These religious and cultural beliefs play a large role in hindering many women from leaving unhappy and abusive relationships,” it further stated.
Mumia said that the move that was made by Ng’ang’a of quitting a relationship she had with Mutua who is a prominent and wealthy politician showed a rare kind of “independence, admirable selfishness, freedom and boldness which many Kenyan married women lack.”
He said that the move was a great one because Ng’ang’a showed one of the values which the AIK believes in; Freedom.
“We hold that all people have the inalienable right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness and that all people are entitled to freedom of conscience,” Mumia said.
Mumia asked women to embrace independence and always follow their hearts if at all they are in unhappy relationships.
He said that the society will not in any way judge them as it will be a matter of time before everything is settled and life goes on.
“Many women fear being unable to cope financially outside the relationship, especially if the man is wealthy. Lilian has overcome the stigma attached to ending a marriage,” he said.
According to AIK, Lilian had handled the judgment so well and she urged women to emulate her steps if at all they are not happy.
The Machakos County first couple, called it quits in mid August after they had been married for five years.
Both of them took to their social media sites and announced the move to end their matrimonial union.
However, they maintained that they were still friends and this was witnessed when Ng’ang’a attended Mutua’s birthday party.
Last week, Ng’ang’a indicated that she was already pregnant from her new relationship with Juliani a man she met mid this year for the first time in her life.
