A Kenyan lady identified as Wawira Njiru is all smiles after she was named as the 2021 United Nations (UN) person of the year.

Njiru is a great contributor to the distribution of relief foods as she is the founder of Food 4 Education (F4E).

It is the initiative and the project of distributing meals to students and pupils targeting those in public schools that saw her receive the recognition.

The World Food Program (WFP) on Sunday, October 24 evening made the announcement that has seen Njiru climb up the ladder not only in Kenya but also within the global sphere.

On Monday, October 25, Njiru was a visitor at Kenya’s UN officers located in Gigiri, Nairobi where she was feted.

“I am really grateful for the recognition, such things are never taken for granted,” she said, adding that the time is now for every Kenyan child to have access to nutritious meals in school.

In 2008, Njiru was also made the first winner of the Global Citizen Prize for Youth Leadership in December 2008.

It is worth noting that the 30-year-old kicked off the F4E program which is registered as a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) in 2011.

At the time, she was an undergraduate student pursuing Nutrition Science at the University of South Australia in Adelaide, Australia.

She started the feeding program after she interacted with her 80 friends in Australia and prepared Kenyan meals which she charges Ksh2000 per plate.

She then kicked off the programme and currently, it is feeding over 33,000 needy school-going children in Kenya.

Njiru believes that students who are fed poorly cannot perform well in school and there is a need of giving them a balanced diet.

Apart from Kenya, Njiru is also praised by a number of Australian citizens for being at the forefront of the program.
