A Kenyan woman, Mariam Mweke, whom police in India accuse of running a drug cartel has been arrested in Mumbai.

Delhi police said they flushed Mweke, 36, out of her hideout in Nalasoplala area of Mumbai after a seven-month hunt.

According to the Times of India, Mweke, had also been on the run from the police after jumping bail in another case she is accused of drug trafficking.

The Nairobi resident, who is allegedly married and has two daughters, is said to have flown to India in 2016 where she started working odd jobs.

The Times of India said Mweke told police that she went to India on a tourist visa for three months but stayed in the country despite her visa expiry.

Police said she later became a drug mule for a Kenyan she met while working odd jobs and used to shuttle drugs between Delhi and Punjab.

With increasing contacts in the narcotics world, police said Mweke set up her own operation and came to their radar after one of her consignments was intercepted in June 2018.

Delhi police arrested her and two associates whom they charged with being in possession of heroin but Mweke later jumped bail.

After missing court appearances, police said Mweke moved her operations to Mumbai from where she was arrested.
