Kenyan man who has been training with Al Shabaab in Somalia arrested

Police in Mandera on Thursday night arrested a Kenya who has been training with Al Shabaab militants in Somalia since January 2021.

K24 Digital has established that the suspect identified as Mohammed Abdow Alio was nabbed within Banisa town.

Police officers acted on a tipoff from members of the public who had smelt a rat.

Upon interrogation, it emerged that Alio was in January 2021 reported as a missing person by Muktar Sheikh who is the Assistant Chief Gurdhis Sub-location.

Questioned by police officers, Alio said that he had been recruited at Merille area within Banisa and joined Al Shabaab training in Somalia.

"The suspect's identity can not be established although he stated verbally that his name is Mohammed Abdow Alio aged about 25 years. No identification documents were found on him," a police report seen by this reporter read in part.

Alio then led officers to Wayam Guest House where he had spent the night and upon searching the room officers found a mobile phone and clothes.

The phone is scheduled to undergo forensic analysis to ascertain the people he has been communicating with.

Currently, the suspect is being questioned by Anti-Terrorism Police Unit (ATPU) in Mandera.
