Kenya Railways has halted repair works on the railway line at Kijabe after one staff member was killed by flash floods on Saturday.

In a statement to newsrooms, Kenya Railways said 10 other members of staff were safely rescued and evacuated to the hospital for treatment.

"The team was on a mission to repair a section of the Metre Gauge Railway line that was recently washed away following heavy rains, posing danger to the community around, whilst trying to resume cargo operations," said KR Managing Director Philip Mainga.

Mainga said he led a team of engineers to the site to evaluate the extent of the damage.

"Our hearts and prayers are with the family and loved ones of the staff who lost his life during the operation, and we wish a quick recovery to all the affected staff," said Mainga.

So far, KR said that eight of those who were taken to hospital have been discharged and only three remain for further observations.
