Purchase of power tokens will be unavailable from 11:59 pm on Friday, March 31, 2023, to Saturday, April 1, 2023, at 11:00 am, Kenya Power has announced.

In a statement shared on their social media pages, the electricity supplier announced that services including the checking of token details shall also be unavailable.

"We wish to inform you that we will carry out system maintenance from Friday, 31 March 2023 midnight to Saturday, April 1 2023 at 11:00 am. As a result, the purchase of prepaid tokens and checking of token details via *977# and myPowe App will be unavailable. We apologize for any inconvenience caused,” the statement read in parts.

This comes as Kenya power prepares for the rollout of new tariffs which will significantly hike the cost of electricity starting on April 1.

In the tariff application to Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (Epra), Kenya Power will raise the power cost for the two categories to 21.68 per unit, excluding the current taxes and levies that amount to about Ksh13 usually loaded in every unit of the power bill.

Those in this category are therefore proposed to pay an estimated Ksh34.68 per unit, representing a 68 per cent rise from the current cost of Ksh20.5 kWh rate.

At Ksh34.68 per unit cost, it means that the utility is set to rake in about Ksh14 billion in revenue from selling power to these consumers.

The figures are based on Kenya Power’s monthly power usage rate data as of June 2022 which shows that domestic and small commercial customers consume an average of 403.02 million kWh of electricity.
