Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) on Sunday said it killed five Al-Shabaab militants during the group's attempt to raid a Kenya-US base in Lamu County.

"Following a military operation, 5 bodies of neutralised terrorists were recovered. Search for more is on-going. 1 PKM gun, 4 RPG launchers, 4 AK 47 rifles, 1 hand grenade and assorted ammunition were captured," said KDF in a statement to newsrooms.

In the 5.30 am failed attack, the militants aimed to breach Manda Airstrip before raiding the US Africa Command counter-terrorism camp.

"The situation has been contained on ground and normal airstrip functions set to resume," said KDF.

The Kenyan military warned that the Al-Shabaab group is known for propagating false and misleading information in an attempt to grab headlines.

"Their contorted plans have not and will never succeed," said KDF.

The military assured Kenyans that they will not relent until they have smoked out all Al-Shabaab operatives from their caves and destroyed them.
