Several Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) soldiers were injured on Sunday, September 10 after a vehicle they were travelling in ran over an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) on Milimani-Baure road in Lamu County.

Confirming the incident on Monday, KDF said the injured officers were airlifted to Manda Base Hospital for medical care.

At the same time, KDF condemned the attack, further calling on Lamu residents to volunteer information that may lead to arrest and prosecution of the criminal elements behind similar incidents in the area.

"KDF condemns the criminals who disrupt movement, and sabotage socio-economic stability in the area. Further, KDF calls upon the residents to share information with the security agencies on these criminal elements who lurk in their communities," KDF said.

The attack comes two months after two soldiers were killed and more than 10 others injured in a similar attack in the troubled coastal county.

Police suspect the IED was planted on the road by Al-Shabaab militants hiding in the Boni forest.

"The armoured personnel carrier was first hit by a roadside bomb and when a team responded aboard a Land Cruiser, they were hit and we have casualties," an official told a local news outlet.

Boni forest has been under special operation aimed at flushing out the Al-Shabaab militants since 2015.
