A 17-year-old girl on Monday, March 22, gave birth just minutes before the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education exams kicked off and still had enough energy to sit her Mathematics paper.

Confirming the incident, Kisumu East Deputy OCPD Charles Wafula, said the Oyola Primary School pupil developed labour pains on Sunday morning.

He said the pregnant teen was taken to the St Elizabeth Chiga Mission Hospital where she delivered a health baby boy on Monday morning at about 7am.

Police and exams officials said the candidate delivered safely and was energetic enough to sit the Mathematics test at the hospital.

On Thursday, March 18, 2021, Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) George Magoha issued a directive for the special treatment of pregnant candidates.

“Any child who has the capacity to sit the examination, the government will ensure that the examination is taken to the child,” CS Magoha said while speaking in Mombasa County.
