The Special Service Unit (SSU) detectives have arrested four youthful men accused of conning a foreign national out of his Ksh29 million in fake gold deal.
The suspects were apprehended at Kasarani Sub-County in Nairobi on Saturday morning (September 26), the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said on Twitter.
The four are alleged to have obtained Ksh29 million from a foreigner under the pretext that they could sell him gold. The alleged conning occurred between April 1, 2019 and February 28, 2020.
The suspects are said to have impersonated DCI officers, and convinced their target that they had been sent by a senior DCI official to sell the gold to the victim.
The victim, whose nationality wasn’t revealed by authorities Saturday, parted with Ksh29 million believing he was dealing with legitimate traders, the DCI said.
However, after successfully obtaining Ksh29 million from the victim, the four continued to demand money from the foreigner until their arrest Saturday, authorities said.
The suspects have been identified as Eric Otieno, Antony Achieng, George Kinuthia Mbugua and Arthur Caleb Otieno.
The quartet, who are being detained at Kasarani Police Station, will be arraigned on Monday, September 28.
