The High Court has certified urgent an application filed by a Kalenjin sub-tribe seeking autonomy from the main group during the upcoming national census.

The Lembus, who live in Baringo County, argued that their culture and ancestry are different.

Justice John Mativo ordered the parties to serve the respondents for the matter to be heard on 12th August during the vacation.

The Lembus community, which is linked to the Tugens in the petition claim that they were forcefully aggregated  saying its a violation of their crucial rights as a different community.

Through their lawyer the group claim they are over 300k people living in the riftvally and that Failure to recognize them as an official tribe in Kenya violates Article 45 of the Constitution which mandates the State to recognize and protect the family as a fundamental rights unit of the society and the necessary basis of the social order.

In court documents the group has sued Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i alongside Attorney General Kihara Kairuki.
