A Kakamega man, aged 27 -years old, is behind bars for allegedly assaulting his wife to death after suspecting that she was engaged in an affair.

According to a report by DCI, the incident took place at their home in Mumias West, Kakamega county.

It is alleged that Edwin Okoth Owino on that fateful day thoroughly beat his 24-year-old wife and her 16-year-old friend after finding a love message sent to his wife by another man.

“On seeing the message on his wife’s phone at around 10.30 pm, Okoth went ahead to call upon the girl (a neighbour) whom he believed was his wife’s best friend, before landing on both ruthlessly with a piece of wood,” DCI said.

Soon after the beating, Okoth would walk into Musanda police station to report the sudden death of his wife.

The 16-year-old neighbour however managed to escape the man’s wrath and hid in her home, but his wife succumbed to the injuries.

The Officer Commanding Station who was busy processing petty offenders for arraignment however became suspicious, directing a few officers to accompany him to the scene ahead of calling upon DCI detectives to carry on with the investigations.

However, detectives would establish foul play once they visited the scene after they found the lifeless body of Okoth's wife lying in the couple's sitting room.

Okoth had told the officer on duty that he went to bed hoping that his wife would join him later, but when he went to check on her, he found her body cold.

“The suspect had at 6.45 am narrated to police that he left his wife in their sitting room last night, when he went to bed, hoping she would join him shortly. Those hours later, when she didn’t show up in the bedroom and believed she was having a power nap, he went to wake her up. Reportedly, he had found her unresponsive and cold, prompting the early morning report of his wife’s sudden death,’ DCI said.

As police probed further into the suspect's inconsistencies, the 16-year-old girl who survived the man's brutality by a whisker last night emerged from the crowd that had since formed up, shedding light on the ordeal.

The suspect is being held at Musanda police stations as detectives conclude investigations into the matter.
