A 35-year-old man from Lukume Village in Malava Constituency, Kakamega County has been arrested after he fatally hacked his 65-year-old mother on Monday evening.

It is alleged that the suspect, James Otuma, pounced on his mother in her homestead, and cut her in the head using a panga following a dispute over the ownership of a tree that sits in the deceased’s compound.

Otuma’s family claim the tricenarian, who is allegedly addicted to bhang, has been terrorising them.

Lukume Location chief, Malik Shanguya, said it is alleged that the suspect has a mental disorder.

After killing the elderly woman, Otuma was cornered by angry residents, who stoned him in a bid to lynch him.

Police, however, swiftly arrived at the scene and rescued the suspect from the angry mob.

Otuma is being held at Malava Police Station, whereas the deceased was moved to Kakamega County Referral Hospital mortuary.

Police say they are investigating the matter before arraigning the suspect in court over murder charge.
