Students' dormitories at Kakamega Boys High School is currently on fire. The fire is said to have begun at around six in the morning.
The school's principal, Gerald Orina told K24 Digital that the fire began a few minutes before 6 AM when the students were already in class for their dawn studies.
"Today morning at 5.45 Am, immediately after the boarding master and teacher on duty put the students in class, we saw some fire from the dormitory," Orina said.
The principal said that no fatality was incurred and the students are calm within the school.
He, however, noted that most of the students' properties have been burnt as they were unable to put off the fire as quickly as possible.
"All the students are in school and nobody has been injured. I, therefore urge the parents to be calm as we go through this," Orina added.
He said that though they have not yet established the cause of the inferno, investigations are currently ongoing.
Kakamega County Deputy Police Commander Daniel Mutisia who confirmed the incident said that they received the report about the fire from the school principal.
"We received a report from the principal that one of the dormitories has caught fire. Upon arriving at the school, we established that two dorms were on fire. We called for help from the county's fire department who responded in time and helped us put off the fire," the police boss said.
Parents who arrived at the school following the incident also confirmed that there were no fatalities from the fire. They urged parents back at home to remain calm as they wait for the school's directive.
"All the children are safe, we have talked to them in their respective classes. You (parent) should remain calm as you will be informed about the results of the investigations," David Wawira Wandaki, a parent and a class rep at the school said.
The parents have, however, disputed any possibility of the students having a hand in the fire. They said that by the time the fire broke out, all the students were in class hence there is no possibility of they (students) having anything to do with the fore. They, therefore, urged the school to ensure proper investigations are done.
"I can't tell if the parents will cater for the repair of the school's dormitory as our children were in class when the fire broke out. A thorough investigation should be done to find the cause of the fire. They should not blame the students for the fire as they were in class reading when it started," another parent identified as Consolata Achieng said.
