Juja Member of Parliament George Koimburi now wants police in the constituency to incorporate drunkards in the war against illicit brew.
Rather than arrest and charge them in court, the legislator advised law enforcement officers to instead use those found partaking of the illegal liquor to nab the sellers and brewers.
"I am appealing to our police officers when they come across these drunk young men not to arrest them but instead escort them home so that the following day when they sober up they can show us the sellers or suppliers," Koimburi said.
Illicit brew menace
The MP was speaking during Mashujaa Day celebrations at Makutano in Theta ward on Thursday, October 20, where residents raised concern over the rampant sale and consumption of illicit alcoholic drinks in the area.
"We should change our approach in the fight against illegal liquor. By arresting the consumers, police will only be crowding the cells while those involved in the sale continue with their unlawful businesses," he stated.
The lawmaker also said that plans were underway to split the constituency into two and create Murera and Juja electoral areas.
Area Assistant County Commissioner Rachel Muiruri had asked members of the public to cooperate with government agencies in fighting the brews menace.
She also cautioned residents against accommodating illegal aliens said to have invaded the area.
Sub-county police commander Philis Muthoni said security operations have been intensified to weed out criminal gangs that were harassing residents, especially in Muthara and Mwireri villages.
